A One-Man United Nations on Two Wheels

       I'm on the road again after I broke my collarbone and had to stay in bed  for 6 weeks in Turkey. My injury changed all my plans for this year and unfortunately I couldn't have a long tour as I planned. Anyway, I enjoyed the days on the way. I started my bicycle tour from Thailand and rode to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Have a nice journey with me. 

"Gokova Pedallarimin Altinda" turu derken bisiklet beni altina aldi. Sonucta koprucuk kemigim 3 parcaya ayrildi, cektigim bir anlik aci pek onemsenecek gibi degildi ama sonradan 6 hafta omuzumun askida kalmasi ve hareketlerimin kisitlanmasi cekilecek gibi degildi. Daha uzun olarak planladigim bu seneki turu maalesef daha kisa yapmak zorunda kaldim. Ama yine buna da sukur.  Oncelikle Tayland'da biraz daha istirahat etmek zorunda kaldim sonradan Laos, Vietnam ve Kambocya'da tura devam ettim. Aslinda bu tur onceden gordigim bazi yerlerle iki sene sonra tekrar kucaklasmak gibi oldu. Gelin beraber yollara duselim simdi isterseniz....

How many time I had to assemble and disassemble my bike after a long flight? 

Isin bir yonden zevkli yani ucak yolculugundan sonra bisikleti tekrar monte etmek. Istanbulda su anda soguklar baslarken Bangkok'da havalar 30 derecenin uzerinde. 

I'm ready to go with my all equipment. Unfortunately I had still terribble shoulder pain from my collarbone fracture. But I knew the only way to recovery was the stretching my shoulder.

Tamam hersey yerli yerinde ayakkabilar cantalara surtunmuyor ancak sag omuzum kazadan dolayi agrilar icinde. Uzun zamandir hareketsizlik tum kaslari tembellestirmis. Tek cozum: hareket.

Believe or not, I had a guest house room with a cable TV and I could watch the Turkish news in the other end of the world. But living without news is like a life without headache. 

Inanilacak gibi degil.  Dunyanin obur ucundayim ve Turkiyeden haberleri seyrediyorum hem de 5 yildizli bir otelde degil de mutevazi bir pansiyonda. Bir yonden de keske cogunlukla olumsuz haberler yayan bu aleti acmasaydim diyorum. TV'siz hayatin tadi daha bir baska.

This is the big main bridge between China and Thailand road connection. 

Laos'un Tayland ile Cin'i baglayan ana yolundaki bir kopru. Kopruden once mutlaka durup karsi trafigi iyice kontrol etmek gerekiyor.

Short break for sugar cane juice. But the breaks lasted longer and longer because of the 40 degrees (90-100 degrees) hot weather.

Dunyanin diger koselerinde zor bulunan seker kamisi suyu sicak havalarda ilac gibi geliyor hem de durmusken yerlilerle konusma firsati doguyor. Konusamasak bile karsilikli gulusuyoruz.  Bisiklete gelince: aslinda bu tur icin titan bir kadroyu hazirlamistim ancak kazadan sonra sogudum ve Cannondale ile ciktim yollara. On amortisor bozuk yollarda ozellikle uzun inislerde buyuk emniyet sagliyor, kadro fazla ziplamiyor.

Bazilari klorlanmis, maviye boyanmis havuzlarda egitmenler esliginde ogreniyor yuzmeyi bazilari da iste boyle sularda deneme sinama yontemiyle. 

The view was so good and the weather was so hot, I had to take a long long break there. Even if I ordered "not a spicy" papaya salad, I couldn't eat it because it was so spicy. The Asians can not understand that we western people don't eat so much spicy like them.

Oglen sicaklari basladi, manzara nefis bir yandan da hafif esinti var. Insanin cani oturdugu yerden kalkmak istemiyor, bazen bir soluk alayim diye ara verdigim pedallama saatler surebiliyor.

Sicaklarda bu manda yavrusunu parazit sineklerden korumak icin hayattaki ilk derslerinden birini veriyor. Gozler haric tum vucutlari camurla kaplanmis.

Cocuklar dunyanin hicbir yerinde Asyadaki gibi guleryuzlu degil. Hemen hepsi mutlaka selam veriyor hatta bazilari nefesleri kesilinceye kadar yanimda kosup bana eslik etmeye calisiyorlar.

Enjoying the village life after a tiring bike day. I couldn't find a place like a coffee shop but the shop keeper gave me a chair to observe the street life.

Koyun hicbir yerinde soyle oturup cay, kahve icilecek bir yer bulamadim, imdadima yardimsever bakkal yetisti ve verdigi sandalyede koy hayatinin akisini seyrediyorum. En enteresani her evin onunde caddede buyuk bir varil var aksamustu herkes evin onunde yikaniyor ozellikle kadinlarin sokakta yikanmasi ayri bir konu.

I was invited to a Laotian wedding party but I couldn't drink the greetings whiskey because all the 300 guests had to drink from the same glass .

Sansima aksama dugune davetliyim. Giriste herkese ayni bardakla whiski ikram ediyorlar, 300 kisinin ictigi bardagi kullanmaktansa alkolsuz bir dugunu tercih ederim. 

A strange tradition. The relatives and friends gave the boxes of beers as a wedding gift. After each song and dance we had a gift ceremony. I think they can booze  from the gifts at least for 3 months.

Her milletin ayri bir adeti var. Lao halki dugun hediyesi olarak kasa kasa bira veriyorlar. Her dansdan sonra hediye merasimi var. Gelinle damadin sanirim 6 ay ickiye para verdiklerini sanmiyorum.

I have a different method to eat my own food, if I can't eat their delicious food which you'll see in the next picture. I buy the vegetables and ingredients from the market and they prepare for me in a restaurant kitchen so I know what I eat .

Oncelikle asagidaki resme bir goz atalim. Bu pazarda sunulan lezzetli bir yemek.  Tabi bunu yiyebilecegimi dusunmezsiniz, bende pazardan sebze alip restaurant'da pisittiriyorum. En azindan icime sinerek temiz temiz bir aksam yemegi yiyiyorum.

They offered almost everything at the village market. The special of the day was a sun dried main course with a lot of salad. Yes it's true. 

Guneste kurutulmus nefis bir fare. 

I'm glad that the restaurant owner's kids  loved my food. It was something different for them.

Village life.Papa was cutting and forming the bamboos and the kids were playing in their own kindergarten.

Tipik bir koy hayati. Kadinlar ev isinde, erkeklerya ormanda yada evin onunde ugrasiyorlar. Cocuklar ise her bilduklari kosede oynuyorlar.

A friendly mum told and taught her kids to greet me in my language. Hello, hello.....

Anne babalar beni gorunce hemen cocuklarina beni gosterip hello diye selamlamalarini istiyorlar.

Can you imagine that there are people out there who still live in those conditions like 100 years ago?

It was terrible loud and sad to see the forest fire so close. 

Orman yanginina yakindan tanik olmak korkunc bir duygu. Insan yanginin o kadar gurultulu olabilecegini TV'den gorunce tahmin edemiyor. Tabiiki cogunlukla koyluler tarla acmak icin yakiyorlar ormanlari.

Here is a home, a shop and a work place, all in one. A lady spends her 24 hours in that area.

Bu cocuklar cok tatliydi, beraberce mizika calip sarkilar soyledik. Vedalasirken bayagi bir uzulduk. 

I couldn't resist a glass of sugar cane juice and a short (long) break.

VIET NAM             March. 2009

Early in the morning. I'm ready for the changing the scenery.

Laos' u bu sene ozellikle secmemin sebebi bitmek tukenmeyen daglariydi ancak daha iyi hazirlanmam gerektigi ortaya cikti. Yokuslar buyuk izdirap haline geldi. Simdi Vietnam'a geciyorum, kondisyonum gec de olsa duzeldi.

Don't worry. They didn't want to rob me. They just exchange the money. 

Sinirdan hemen sonra bu bayanlar doviz bozup gunluk kazanclarini saglamaya calisiyorlar. Gozlemledigim kadariyla Asyanin en caliskan insanlari Vietnam ve Cinliler.

                            Bu guzel otantik kiyafetli geline modern kilikli damadin bati ozentisi kiyafeti hic yakismamis gibi geldi bana.

Rain, rain... I was glad to find a shelter for a cup of hot coffee.

Vietnam'a gecer gecmez havalar hemen serinledi ve yagmurlar basladi. Yagmurda kisa bir mola verirken binbir guclukle ta mutfaklara kadar girerek buyuk bardak tarifi yapip bir kahve iciyorum.

The cyclists like an old friends on the road at the first sight even if they don't know each other. We try to change our experience and to know about the road conditions in front.

Yollarda bisikletciler karsilasinca sanki 40 yillik ahbap gibi konusuyorlar, tabiiki konusacak cok sey var. Bu karsi taraftan gelen Isvec'li arkadas bana ilerdeki yol sartlarini basindan gecen tecrubeleri anlatiyor bense diger yondekileri.

Hue, a beautiful city. It was raining when I left the city 3 years ago and now it was still raining 

Burasi Vietnam'in guzelim sehri Hue, ancak 2 sene once buradayken yagmur hic aman vermemisti bu senede ayni biraktigim gibi.

Vietnam can't be imagined without water buffalos.

Mandalarin ve yagmurun olmadigi bir Vietnam'i dusunmek cok zor.

Laos was extremely hot but Vietnam was cooler and it was comfortable to ride my bike. I took the helmet off just for a photo. I wouldn't ride without it again.

Bu dagin altindan 12 kmlik bir tunel gectiginden yollar cok sakin ve bu yuzden kaskimi kisa bir sure olsada cikariyorum.

This mountains separate the rainy north and sunny south Vietnam. I exactly knew after the mountains it's gonna sun shine again.

Bu dag kuzey ve guney Vietnam'i ayiriyor. Eminimki guney tarafi gunluk guneslik.

Fortunately I used my rain coat only one day.

Aslinda yagmur yagarken hava sicak oldugu icin yagmurluga pek gerek kalmiyor.

I was right that the weather in south was friendlier. 

Iste tahmin ettigim gibi dagin guneyi gunesli.

Bus drivers drive without accident only with Buddha's help. They stoped, prayed and gave some food for Buddha in some places.

Buralarda otobus soforleri bazen koprulere yiyecek ve sigara birakiyorlar boylece tanriya bir adak vermis oluyorlar veya Budda heykellerine mum yakip yiyecek birakiyorlar boylece kazasiz belasiz bir yolculuk icin sigorta yaptirmaya gerek kalmiyor.

Oh be cantalar olmadan bisiklet ne kadar hafifmis.

It's usual that the shy Vietnamese girls swim with their clothes and walk all the way home in their wet outfit.

Vietnam'in utangac kizlari tum gun elbiseleriyle denize girip aksamustu islak islak evlerine donuyorlar.

Women celebrated the Women's Day with songs and dances on the beach.

Kadinlar gununde sahilde sarkilar ve danslarla Vietnam'li kadinlar erkekler olmadan ozgurlugun tadini cikariyorlar.

A happy city, my favourite city Nha Trang. A lot of people were on the street after a hard working day. It's strange that just a few people on the streets after 11 pm.

Nha Trang, en begendigim sehirlerden biri. Insanlari utangac, icten ve yardimsever. Seneye tekrar daha uzun sure buraya gelmeyi isterim. Aksamustu tum sahil dolu ancak 11 den sonra herkes evlerine cekiliyor.

I couldn't resists coconuts.

Taze Hindistan cevizleri iyi bir enerji kaynagi.

Another delicious food. Guess what are they? Turtles....... You can still see the legs and feet. No thanks. 

Bunlar nedir dersiniz? Evet nefis kamplumbaga kebabi.  Hatta ayaklari bile hala gozukuyor. 

It wasn't a refreshing bath but a fish therapy. Do you want to know how?

Bu havuzdada nelermi oluyor?

It's a coincidence, they brought all the fish from Turkey and the fish eat and heal your skin. It didn't hurt but it was itchy,a strange feeling.

Adamlar bu baliklari Turkiyeden getirmisler. Baliklar derinin dis yuzeyindeki bolgeleri yiyip bir nevi tedavi ediyorlar.         

Heyyyy. can you leave a path for me please. I don't want to walk the rest of the 50 miles.

Ya kardesim butun yolu mahvetmissiniz, bana bisiklet surecek yer kalmamis, simdi kalan 50 mili yuruyecekmiyiz yani.

It's so boring and annoying, if I had a head wind, strong sunshine and a long straight flat road.

So, even if I couldn't travel longer, I saw a lot of new places, learned a lot of new things and met a lot of nice people. I realised the life without TV and news has some advantages. You don't get headache after the world recession news.  I love this part of the world. The people are very respectful, peaceful and friendly. I would like to come here again and again.
